  • Art punk

  • Punk rock
  • Post-hardcore

Eksisteeris aastatel 2008-2011 netileibel nimega Rack And Ruin Records, mille boss Dean Birkett korjas muusikafoorumitest ülesse kodus salvestavaid artiste. Elik pungist on täitsa poogen artistidel. Lühikesed lood, mille energia pekstakse ülesse nurgeliste kidrade ja happeliste süntidega, kolisevate trummide ja karjuva vokaaliga. Tõsi, paar lugu on ka jutustavad – näiteks üks artist räägib oma eesnime saamise loost. Kohmakas ja ülendav samaaegselt. Samuti on üllitis näide, kuidas eksisteeriv asi võib pealtnäha kõikvõimsas netis jäljetult kaduma minna.

Crowcat – Color Bendin (2011)

  • Avant-garde

  • Avant-blues
  • Experimentalism
  • Improvised noise
  • Avant-rock

Kummaline oli vaadata neid stiilimärksõnu, milledega olin püüdnud inglise keeles kirjeldada seda albumit kümme aastat tagasi. Väga mööda. Ei ole see ei tehniline ega metallmuusika. See on tribuut mürale ja ekstaasile, eksperimentidele ja raadiolainetele. Hinge sügavatest soppidest kasvavad välja tummised bassikõminad ja elektrooniliselt risustatud kajaefektid. Vahele vokaalseid sõnarünnakuid, mis annavad albumile inimliku(ma) mõõtme. Ekstaasi ülalhoidmine ei õnnestu, selleks on teos liiga sakiline ja hüplev, liiga kiiresti kuju muutev. Metallmuusika asemel seestub muusika bluusipõhiselt, sel viisil meenutades umbes samal ajal alustanud brasiillast Lucas Pastina't.

Jane Buerk – "...sings Enculé and her other Hits" (2020)

  • Noise
  • Avant-garde
  • Abstract
  • Non-music
  • Experimentalism
  • Psycho-acoustic
  • Electronic music

Naaseme taas plaadifirma Year Zero kogu manu. Tühjus on vaba kannatustest. Tõele au andes Jane Buerk`i teoses kohtab militarismi vähe – toda militaristlikku valget müra, mis muusikamängija kogu spektri maksimaalses ulatuses haarab kõige madalamatest kõrgeimate sagedusteni välja. Kord kiiremini, kord aeglasemalt, kord inertselt, kord ergastatult – üks segane faasinihe kestab siin pidevalt.

Nagu näha plaadiümbrise paremas alumises nurgas –  "tuumaseen" püsti täies hiilguses – on käesolev üllitis osa Year Zero diskograafiast. Plaadifirma, mis on seotud Johnny Zchivago'ga, ainupostitajaga blogis Die or DIY, pakkudes seekord suhteliselt rahuliku meelelaadiga katsetusrokki Leicester'i triolt – külgnedes postroki, ämbiendi, elektroonika ja indiroki piirimail. Vahetevahel omandades tee-seda-ise (kaitse)kihi. Natuke improviseerimist-nupukruttimist. Ikka ja jälle on küsitud (kitarri)rokkmuusika tervise ja surma ja sellest rääkimise asjakohasuse järele käesoleval ajal (kas Elvis on surnud?). Kuulates Year Zero diskograafiat (ja käesolevat) üllitist, on teated vanakese enneaegsest surmast liialdatud. Siinkirjutaja arvates on viimased 7-8 aastat popmuusikas olnud suhteliselt asjatud – midagi asjalikku (samas ennustan – ilmselt märkimisväärimatut ajaloolisel tasandil) on aeg-ajalt läbi tulnud, aga üldine pilt on (varju)surmas püsimine. Eks see käesolev seitsmelooline albumgi on mõnes mõttes teadlik paroodia – kesse ikke paneb projekti nimeks mõnuga Phool? Very phool.

Lisaks meenub sellega seoses üks veider kidraeksperimentidel põhinev album kahe dekaadi tagant – Tore Elgarøy "The Sound Of The Sun" (2001, Rune Grammofon). "Escapamento Mental" on väga hea – iga korraga kasvab see suuremaks ja pöörasemaks nagu kontrolli alt väljunud tulekahi. Selleks, et seda 4-loolist saada, peate alla laadima kogu LFC diskograafia (nimelt Lucas on kogu oma muusika pistnud ühte virtuaalpakendisse. Segane!).

ZOG – Subvertebrates (2020)

  • Psychedelic
  • Avant-rock
  • Psych-rock
  • Avant-blues
  • Experimental rock
  • Improvised music
  • Space rock
  • Art rock

Mitte justkui – ilmselt ongi. See vist ongi psühhedeelia.

Nicolas Tourney - Sightline (2020)

  • Avant-garde
  • Microtonal
  • Epic
  • Abstract
  • Experimentalism
  • Drone
  • Ambient drone
  • Electronic music

Prantsuse eksperimentaalmuusik Nicolas Tourney on uue aastakümne elik käesoleva aasta sees üllitanud juba kuus albumit. Üllitis on täke USA leibeli Vulpiano diskograafias. Suurepärane torude-juhtmete ventileerimine.

Son of ZOG – Son of ZOG (2019)

  • Improvised music
  • Avant-rock
  • Psychedelic
  • Experimental rock
  • Space rock
  • Krautrock
  • Psych-rock
  • No Wave

Comment: if you would like to differentiate Son of ZOG from ZOG then the first one comes chronologically after the latter by providing frantic sax improvisations in the embodiment of Phil Allison, additionally to Christophe Medina (the drums), Jonny Zchivago (bass), and Nadine Aleman (electronics). Indeed, one and the only Jonny Zchivago, by far the most important (my favourite blogger, of course!) behind Die or D.I.Y is involved in these projects.
What to say about this 10-notch outing? It is as intense and voluptuous as a wedding act between an innumerable number of venomous snakes in spring. It spits poison, mud and semen to oil a conventional drum and guitar configuration into economically a scorching but artistically blossoming underground act. Otherwise, getting inspiration from acts being depicted at Die or D.I.Y blog the likes of Glenn Branca, CAN, nihilistic old school industrial projects, obscure post-punk and No Wave acts (of showing up frequently inclination toward any kind of aesthetical transgression). I don't guess the combo has knowingly followed any aforementioned or not mentioned group more detailedly yet one can inevitably find out some similarities because before that so immense amount of music has been produced to blow up the servers in future. Putting aside my smartass brouhaha just find time to listen to this untamed flow of instruments and perceive frantic states of mind on the bottom of it. The issue is a part of the discography of Year Zero Records.

Anémic Cinema - We All Dream, We All Die (2009)

  • Gothic rock
  • Darkgaze
  • Cinematic
  • Post-punk
  • Alternative rock
  • Coldwave
  • Ethereal Wave
  • Darkwave

Comment: I have not reviewed many post-punk albums which could be tagged "cinematic" anyhow. Anémic Cinema (what a great name for a combo!) is one of such acts by straddling on the border of moderate powerful and strongly dreamy, in other terms, it is something which conveys an existential anxiety of one's burden of living and impending descending into death. It may be the former is even worse because the perspective of the human being who could live forever it would be truly horrendous. However, many people act against it as if the rules of cosmic power and Eternity were erroneous and as if we were God-alike creatures. Maybe we are but we don't have the omnipotence of Lord. So we are not ultimately, though. Most of us can see nothing more than just bare shadows on the wall of a cave (reference to Plato). Just like living in an idiot joy showland (reference to MES and The Fall). Thirdly, the drift between life and death is something natural and...dreamy and of course mystical. Like something based on a plot by David Lynch. Thanks to the existence of death one could more appreciate his/her life. These 5 compositions of clocking in at a 24 minute and being a bit of the discography of Zorch Factory Records are a blend of such tendencies previously brought forth by Joy Division, Lycia, The Durutti Column, Dream City Film Club, Siouxsie And The Banshees but showing up their own measure within this trademark of floating atmospheric synths, pounding drums, and thundering basses, and expressive guitar licks. Unfortunately I could find out the issue from within the discography of Zorch Factory anymore so I decided to hint at a Mediafire link.

Stjerneheimen – II (2013)

  • Hardcore
  • Post-metal
  • Experimental metal
  • Avant-metal
  • DIY
  • Drone doom metal
  • Progressive
  • Improvised music
  • Freeformfreakout

Comment: these 13 tracks clocking in at a 20 minute are issued on Velvet Blue Records filled in with galvanized guitar-induced monoliths, rattling hi-hats and quirky threads dominated by sheer electronic effects and unusual drumming times and instrumental deviation all along. The more I am getting into it the more I realize the artist's intention just to manipulate with metal-related heaviness rather than serving it as the purpose. The listener can perceive how the aforementioned genres are disintegrated and pulverised for the sake of playfulness and artistic fun, for the sake of sonorous entertainment and artistic madness. The Convoys can be considered an exception of excelling at hardcore punk. Another exception is The Nothingness by doing away with the gravity of experimentation and heaviness of metal. Just to start off and fading into nothing as the title refers to. Thirdly, the issue is produced by exploiting DIY attitude and lo-fi approach of which artists are predominantly penchant for sonic experiments. This one is the case. Volatile handling on a guitar and rejecting demarcated stylistic borders reminds of another Brazilian maverick called Lucas Pastina aka LFC.

Hanging Freud – Nowhere (2018)

  • Drone pop
  • Synth-rock
  • Organcore
  • Coldwave
  • Art pop
  • Dark wave
  • Electro-indie
  • Synthwave
  • Ambient pop
  • Post-punk

Comment: Hanging Freud (at times it has been called Hangin Freud) is the duo of Paula Borges and Jonathan Skinner whose brand new album Nowhere continues the way the Brazil/British duo has been trudging since the beginning of the 10s. It is an enchanting bound of droning vibrant organs, hovering synths, and restrained female singing. Undoubtedly this is an uncompromising yet blissful pop album inspired by Joy Division yet drifting toward more synth-driven direction. Yet it is neither a new wave nor a synth-pop release. Its poppy strain reflects upon something else. At times it may be considered an accelerated version of Lycia or a pre-exorcized rebound of Cocteau Twins. If such a sort of album were released 35-40 years ago it would have been considered a hallmark outing.  The outstanding issue is a part of the discography of myhand.thanx imprint.

Borgesss – The Invisible Rope (2017)

  • Slowcore
  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Americana
  • Gothic rock
  • Singer-songwriter

Comment: does God lie? What happens next if the witch grabs you by the hand? And if you are surrounded by the howl of a pack of wolves or immersed in the darkest blue for some reason? Instead of wolves you could freely be surrounded by Tony Montana, Anton Chigurh, or Max Cady-alike personae. Instead of God you can put the word 'president' or 'leader' to the sentence who know for what is the best for their nations. You can see what is going on in France during a month as the subsequence of such sort of arrogance. And you will have no chance to blame the so-called populists anymore. Furthermore, it indicates the term 'populism' has been used in an exaggerated way. By facing all of that you are either devastated to the bottom in a paralyzing way or will it provide you some power or even inspiration to create something arousing on its own. On this 6-notch release the minor chords played on bold guitar strings and suppressed female singing supported by faint echoes and synthesised electronics are governing the course for all our pleasure. Of course, additionally I do fancy it because Borgesss is the solo project by Paula Borges, the lead vocal of a favourite combo of mine, Hanging Freud. Indeed, there is no chance to partake in deviation of quality and tasteless self-indulgent excesses. By kindred souls one can draw parallels to such artists as Thalia Zedek, Cat Power, For Solacing Grief, Le Bâtiment, Lullabier. The decorous issue is a part of the discography of an imprint called myhand.thanks.

Bongley Dead – 4 (2015)

  • Alternative rock
  • Indie rock
  • Post-grunge
  • Hardcore

Comment: recently Italian quartet Bongley Dead released a brand new one, Undici, on their own terms being uploaded and letting available for free download at Soundcloud, and Mediafire. Before that they had issued 4, the predecessor of Demo n.3 (2014). In comparison to its predecessor 4 abandons trudging across a path being based on heavy and moshy alternative rock guitars (though Demo n.3 includes exceptions either – even hints at dance punk/rock were represented over there). The guitars are more extended and outstretched, light-hearted and jangling in their timbre and style of play. Yet one should not forget and misunderstand it is not an example of jangle pop because the combo is being influenced and rooted by hardcore and (post-)grunge music. For instance, Blueworms is a pure example of post-grunge style with a commercially accessible tone. Nice pop song indeed. Similarly to the previous outing a Sonic Youth influence (especially at Silent Queen) is also present over there yet it is more buried as it was presented in some songs at Demo n.3. A poppy Sonic Youth version. At She Comes Too Late the ending part is accentuated with epic shoegaze tinged noises. It can be admitted their style seems to be more uniform and unvarying with regard to the previous one. By the way, they are being very kind by adding 41 cover prints (sic!) within the folder. I did have to choose only one from this bunch. Because of having listened to the great album a next step of mine is to listen to Undici.

Scouts Of Uzbekistan – Hate Is Our Religion (2016)

  • Post-punk
  • Avant-rock
  • Experimental rock
  • Space rock
  • Improvised music
  • Doom rock
  • Ambient

Comment: my choices regarding music commented at Recent Music Heroes are sporadic and with no specific intention. so I can admit the fact I am back again at the discography of Year Zero Records of which aim is to provide cutting edge sonic appearances of different predilections. And when it happens to you you can consider yourself a lucky you because it usually happens to be a mind-provoking experience. This time Scouts Of Uzbekistan provides guitar-based experiments through the glimpses in post-punk, space rock, improvised music/rock though it used to embrace elements of more styles in overall. Minor, glowering bass frequencies are intertwined with loose sounds of kit drums and other parts of the drums. At times one can perceive ill-omened, diabolical energy pouring quite invisibly from the restrained yet effect providing slots. In many cases the tracks are embellished with mutant vocals and eerie echoes wherein you can track down dormant anger and lurking flashbacks behind it. It is a sort of reversed psychedelic thing, it is blackened psychedelia. It is fairly sympathetic to enjoy rough yet honest sounds of the rehearsal room. Yet I Am The Alter-Destiny is a beatific ambient impression demonstrating the artist's ability to move in disparate directions. All in all get it into your soul. Get overwhelmed. Do not hesitate for asking it. That's the thing.

Neurotic Wreck – Glow Ghosts (2016)

  • Synth-pop
  • Indie pop/rock
  • Krautrock
  • Punk funk
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • New wave
  • Post-punk
  • Art rock
  • Electro-indie

Comment: Neurotic Wreck is the Englishman Daniel Shea with some of his friends. St Helens, Merseyside resident has been active since 2011 though the most prolific year for him seems obviously to be the previous year. He is an artist who is having ability to compel a listener with a bunch of great songs within 13 tracks and a 53 minute. Dan Shea is a contemporary artist who has exploited the past to reconstruct catchy melodies and enchanting harmonies in the vein of new wave, post-punk, noise pop, synth-pop, and krautrock. However, the aforementioned list of the styles is not restricting and suffocating at all, it is just a notice you can follow while driving through these 53 minutes. By contemporary artists he can be compared with Alan Driscoll aka The Womb though there can be drawn parallels to the likes of a murky Pulp (at Speak In My Voice), The Jesus & Mary Chain (at I´ll Always Care), The Cure (Never Enough), XTC, Human League, Talk Talk, Joy Division (it is another list of remarks). The issue is a part of the discography of Vulpiano Records.

Qoreader – Seventhouses (2014)

  • Electronic dance music
  • Electro pop
  • Techno pop
  • Rave music
  • House pop
  • Post-disco
  • Folktronica

Comment: undoubtedly The Indonesian Qoreader`s 10-notch is an amusing one to listen to. However, by listening to it this arises some questions in me – how should it be tagged? Is it either rave pop or electronic dance music; is it either electro pop or post-disco? Of course, the latest definition and electronic dance music are ambivalent ones by their nature – as much as I have understood the term ”electronic dance music” is related to certain artists all over the world. “Post-disco” is a kind of electronic music being emerged after the explosion of disco music, which does say a little concrete about the real status of things. I guess Qoreader does have dug up some elements from the aforementioned styles, of which borders are so hazy and will be blurred with any next month going by. More in detail, it involves catchy rhythms, superficial yet frequently mind-blowing melodic patterns (for instance, at UptoHigh) and sampled vocal interference (aggressive female sayings surprisingly). There are up even some mocking elements interwoven into the sonic text in one track – “are you ready?” What the fuck does it mean? The Red Veil can be considered the exception of the whole because of being built up on a folk and electronic music mingled pace. The artist himself says that techno music is his root and dark ambient is his influence. To proof this statement or not you must spend some time with these 28 minutes. The issue was self-released through Mediafire two years ago. I like it. I like it very much.

Modern Peasant – Silk Rope (2005)

  • New Weird America
  • American Primitivism
  • Anti-folk
  • Drone folk
  • Experimental folk
  • Psych-folk
  • Art folk
  • Avant-folk
  • Free folk
  • Improvised music

Comment: by listening to the album Silk Rope by the artist Modern Peasant I guess it evokes many thoughts within the listener’s head. First of all, it chimes as a modern equivalent of the so-called American Primitivism movement, being established and popularised foremost by such artists as John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and Leo Kottke. Musically it does mean it is filled with warped and extended guitar chords as if they were played on the prepared, vibrant instrument. As I already denoted the album to be a modern equivalent of the style the first part of it hints at intriguing electronic sounds, arousing sonic effects and some suggestive noises within it. However, the artist must be praised due to having the inner measure line in itself to balance these compartments in a moderate way. Because of the aforementioned contemporary part within the artist`s music Silk Rope could be pigeonholed as an exemplary of the New Weird (America) movement, for instance, having much in common with Ben Chasny’s Six Organs Of Admittance, and the French experimental folk duo Natural Snow Buildings` droning landscapes full of beatific magic. In a word, the result is enchanting providing fare to your soul and heart. Initially this 8-track issue was released on an Asheville, NC-based netlabel, Epicaricacy, what at the moment is very hard if not impossible to dig up. The issue truly deserves to be disseminated through thousands of headphones and loudspeakers over the world and universe. It is very rare and precise.

Paneye - Remote Summer Clouds (2014/2015)

  • Synthwave
  • Alternative dance
  • Ambient
  • Dream folk
  • Free folk
  • Electronic music
  • New Weird Australia
  • Experimental folk
  • Synth electro
  • Kosmische Musik
  • Synth fusion

Comment: Behind the pseudonym Paneye has been doing the Aussie Will Treffry whose music I first met almost 7 years ago while he did issue the album Wilt And Loom under Dog Eared Records. Then he took more on abstract ambient and folk tinged compositions. On the other side, his recent music is remarkbaly more synthesised and sequencer dominated thereby resulting more in dance beats with different angles and threads which in turn are imbued with the flickers of Kosmische musik and ambient music. Indeed, the kick drums used to beat there against your ears and head. In contemporary context, however, this could be considered as an example of synthwave music. However, some compositions at the final part provide stylistic hints at the aforementioned album thereby reminding the end of the 00s. For instance, Corridors chimes like a Japanese flicker with sublime synths and spacey vocals in the background to support the minimalist koto motive in the forepart. Similarly, Grey Eyes could be a solid exponent on possible miscellany of New Weird Australia because of being slightly muddy and enchanting in its folk-ology. In a nutshell, the result is outstanding to be enjoyed in any weather.

Sun Devoured Earth - The Sunshine Always Fades (2011)

  • Ethereal Wave
  • Alternative rock
  • Shoegaze
  • Dream pop
  • Gothic rock
  • Post-rock
  • Darkwave
  • Epic

Comment: firstly, I have no hesitation at all while I am going to start to listen to any of the outings by the Latvian one-man project Sun Devoured Earth. Vadim`s music does have many hints at throughout this 14-notch album. It used to range from powerful, gloomy shoegaze and dream pop tinged guitar-based noise walls to more restrained, dark wave-ish incantations, however, being fulfilled with vital, sustainable energy. All these shifts used to realize in a seamless way where one track or mood is followed by other ones to build up something otherworldly and beatific. Although one could hear some similarities with such combos as Lycia, My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, Autumn`s Grey Solace, Love Spirals Downwards the result is unique due to its pristine fragmentation and idiosyncratic dreamed-out climaxes. Although the main motif of the issue is relatively dark-hued it paradoxically provides a breeze of optimism for you to amend your miserable, hopeless life in the middle of human being`s vanity. In this case let`s tell about it as an appealing, irresistible misanthropic example. For me, Sun Devoured Earth has been the favourite combo of me from Latvia, the southern neighbouring country of Estonia.

Comment: the Japanese musician Takeshi Kagamifuchi`s 5-track issue might have different aspects with regard to experimental electronic and techno music. First of all, it seems he created the outing by exploiting debris-alike bits and sounds like hisses, microscopic noises, static, crackles, signals, glitches. These sounds would be very dead by standing alone and without giving it revivified boost or organizing it in a certain, expressive direction. In general, Kagamifuchi`s sound could be called techno though it does lack the common very nature with style called techno. The Japanese musician`s accent is not related to dance-appealed vibes but rather exploring the inner life of the aforementioned elements which seems to live their life on their own. Secondly, the album could be understood as a platform for exploring relations between the aforementioned sonic details and natures of different kind. Furthermore, the soundscape which might seem starkly austere at first glance could be remarkably more high-spirited and alive then superficial mainstream pop act of being deflated from essential ideas. Thirdly, one could grasp there is subtle border if at all between the so-called established sounds and “errors” (I mean crazed sounds). The only exception is a track called Uni which reveals its affinity toward house ideas though this should be grasped in an abstract, indirect way. In a word, the result is an outstanding insight into techno music. Unfortunately the album which was issued under Hz-Records does not exist anymore so I decided to upload it again. Indeed, it is a rare issue.
