Inger On The Rock – Heimkoma (2008)

  • Post-rock
  • IDM
  • Art pop/rock
  • Indietronica
  • Epic
  • Organic electronica
  • Electronic music
  • Glitchtronica
  • Experimental pop

Comment: this bunch of 13 tracks by a Russian artist (Eredel) is a sublime sonorous pavement to imaginatively trudge along the picturesque landscapes of Iceland, because of that all the song titles and cover print are Icelandic. Additionally, the music also seems to be partly inspired by the country's leading artists like Sigur Ros's sublimely bombastic orchestrations and múm's awkward and austere yet perky electronic grooves and splattering glitches (the very preference of mine). If to go beyond the borders of Iceland one can find out resemblances with the likes of Hood, and To Rococo Rot. On the other side, the picture is even more wide – the listener can hear abrasive, broken drum beats and ennobling digital noise torrents as the soil for melodies to effectively grow up on and sparse incantations on a piano and a cathedral-alike organ led droning beauty. Additionally, let's take a track entitled Vorkoma – it is headed by a contagious melody gear being propelled by a swirling chaos of arousing noises coming through enchantingly configured labyrinths. The artist looks a bit back while pushing the music further while staying vigorously balanced between variety and consistency. The wondrous outing is a part of the discography of Elpa Music, a solid Latvian record label (2006-2013).

Plastik Kettle – New Horizons EP (2011)

  • Alternative pop
  • Electro pop
  • Robot pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Synth pop

Comment: The Sardinia, Italy-residing musicians Alessandro Pintus & Corrado Caocci have said they are inspired by the universe of robots and their profound passion for the synthesizers. By watching the title of their first issue Our Toys Are Better Than Yours (2007, Elpa) the duo`s statement gets cemented further. Their sophomore issue New Horizons EP proves also that the music of Italian combo is a highly subtle undertake on robots and electronic keyboards. The flow is iridescent due to warped yet graceful vocals and elegantly bouncing electronic rhythms full of (artificial) solar rays and organic synth templates. In a word, if this issue were a part of the discography of a well-known artist it would be widely recognized. The issue is a solid notch in the discography of the Latvian imprint Elpa music.

Simiram - Talvinen Juttu (2011)

Elpa

9.0

/Downtempo, IDM, Poptronica, Chill out, Psyambient/

Comment
: Talvinen Juttu is a follow-up to Somni (Winter) issued in 2010, and Loona issued in 2011 by Ivan "Simiram" Filin. He used to produce subtle shifts between majestic downtempo, poptronica, and IDM-patterned paces which are mixed up with the influences of ethnic music, enthralling symphonic and glacial reflets (as astonishing as St Elmo`s Fire), psychedelic trance progressions. It reminds a little of the outlets of Tunguska Electronic Music Society, a Russian based very interesting art/music collective with whom Filin has collaborated by the way. Finally, it is a little bit lazy but elegant sort of entertainment, however, in the first place thought for your brain and for your soul.

Thompost - Muffled (2011)

Elpa

9.5

/Post-rock, Indietronica, Organic electronica, Experimental folk, Folktronica, Experimental indie, Art pop/

Comment: every artist under this sun (and under the other possible suns either) has its genuine vision and speech to describe the world or at least some parts of it. Thompost provides a sublime indie/folk/post-rock vista where organic string-based layers are craftily embellished with the fringes of electronica and some ebullient orchestrated beauty over it. Furthermore, all the concept is built on the contrast of rough and sparse yet expressive patterns and on the other side pertaining of flowing fairness and throbbing sensitiveness. At times it seems to be quicker, at times it is more restraint, yet, most of the time it gets attention from the listener. This 11-track masterpiece is issued on an eminent label from Latvia, called as Elpa.

Delayscape - Moments, Men and Places EP (2011)

Elpa

8.7

/Electronic pop, Downtempo, Chill out, IDM, Chilltronica/

Comment: Delayscape is an experienced, profilic musician from Copenhagen, Denmark having been involved in industrial and electronic music scenes since the first half of 90`s. He used to exploit hardware devices only to conjure up lush analogue sound on its own. Picturesque, harmony-relied progressions and elliptically shaped synthetic chord progressions are up here to provide a loads of variegating backdrops for soothing electronica and billowy downtempo. Indeed, the issue can be considered an instance of chilltronica either.

Northcape - Alluvial EP (2011)

Elpa
Lastfm

9.2

/IDM, Electronic pop, Ambient, Experimental indie, Shoegazetronica, Soundscape, Crossover, Dream pop/

Comment: Arghh, it is simply filled in with beauty. Indeed, it is highly intricate by its concept and ouput. It starts out as a buffer zone between soothing electronic pop and IDM-esque shadows, which soon will be evolving into another zone, getting running on dream-alike soundscapes and electronic-drenched shoegaze music similar to Bing Satellites, Northern Picture Library or M83 having its run on restraint mode. The EP consisting of 4 tracks and issued on the Latvian label Elpa can be considered a classical one. First of all, it is recommended for all those old indie guys and gals having acquired their favorite music experiences during the 80s and 90s, and for those people as well who just used to love beautiful music on its own.

W Physalis EP (Elpa)

Anonüümsus on eetiline hoiak - sattusin hiljuti sellele sententsile peale ühes ajakirjas.

Kas mõni muusik, kelle identiteet on paljastatud, muutub seeläbi paremaks? Pseudoprobleem tegelikult.

Läti label`i Elpa üllitatud 4-looline EP ütleb rohkem kui mõni sarnane, kuigi 2-3 korda pikem reliis. Käesolev pakub näiteid ambient`ist, downtempo`st, IDM`st, isegi kosmische musik`i ja new age`i varjundeid võib siin kohata. Kuigi siin on ka digitaalset heliloomet - nt lõpulugu épiphyte, mis kõlab kui negatiivse efekti kaudu perfektsust püüdlev glitch-vare -, on rõhk peaasjalikult süntesaatorite naturaalsel tonaalsusel, kuigi need vormid, milles varjundid ilmnevad, ei pruugi turvalised olla - kuigi see turvalisuse probleem muusika ja kuulaja vahel näib ka tänapäeval üha anakronistlikumaks muutuvat. Süntesaatorite kesksuse kaudu meenuvad seesugused elektroonikud nagu Lackluster, Myrakaru, Younnat, Electricwest. Elektroonilised klahvpillid pulseerivad, helisevad, loovad koguni popilikku/rokilikku lasu (nimilugu) ning kiledamat helikudet. Vormiliselt intrigeeriv, emotiivselt äratav, milles 70ndate elektroonilise muusika ideoloogia kooskõlastub 90ndatest alguse saanud intellektuaaltehnoga.
