Between Two Waves The Second Wave (2014)

Eardrums Pop

Indie pop Alternative pop Twee pop Psychedelic Electronic Jangle pop Doo wop Synth-pop

Näiteks mõni lugu sisuliselt on elektrooniline/süntpop.

Artiste on Le Colibri Nécrophile'i koostatud ja üllitatud kogumikul palju, ent mitte neljakümne jagu, kuivõrd ollakse esindatud mitme kompositsiooniga.

Käesolev 13-looline on kena žest kadunud USA netimuusika suurusele Jared C. Balogh'ile (09.04.1975 - 01.04.2019). Jared ise on esindatud looga "Self Reflect", mis ühelt poolt on lo-fi'lik Casio Tonebank'il soleerimine, ent mille kulgu hakkab vürtsitama tumemeelne klassikaline muusika. Teine Jared'i lugu on kahasse Protecious'ega. Veel astuvad üles Lezet, The Hauchzart Ensemble, Dayward, Wilfried Hanrath, Saint De L'Abime, WAAS, Daniel Honnold ja Cabrini Green. See on järjekorras teine tribuut legendile, kes näitas inimmajakana, kuidas tuleb teha ja elada. Tema kaja jääb kestma. Sellest hooli(tse)takse.

Artistidest on esindatud Archers by the Sea, Dirty Beaches, Ela Orleans, Gremlins, Holy Strays, Je suis le petit chevalier, Jeans Wilder, Skitter, Terror Bird, Wet Hair ning yves son ace. Nii mõnigi artist peaks kuulajale tuttav olema. Ja Ela Orleans'i fänn olla keegi David Lynch.

Siin on esindatud järgmised artistid: Digital Gnosis, Kang, Muddy Belle, Andrew Rose, Wooden Cabin, Strand Child, Close Counters, Tropo, CLOUDWARMER, The Peaks and Valleys, Fields Ohio ja Ruby Watson.

Selle kogumiku esikvend ehk (In) on märksa kobedam.

Oleme jõudnud aega, kus termin “New Weird” ei ütle enam mitte midagi, kuna hõlmab eneses kõike elik sisuliselt mitte midagi. Teisalt on kogumiku koostajad kogutud muusikat algusest saati defineerinud mutantmuusikana, mistõttu distantseeritus on juba eos sisse seatud. Rääkides muusikast, mida see kogumik kätkeb, võiks küsida, et mida see ei sisalda eksperimentaalmuusika skaalal. Vabajäts ja kõrvulukustav müramuusika puuduvad siit, peamine rõhuasetus on ehk ämbientmuusikal – sellist sorti ämbientmuusika, mida tänapäeva modulaarsüntesaatorivõlurid armastavad luua ehk sulnis kõikumine abstraktse ja emotiivse vahel, olles samaaegselt lähedal ja kauge; progressiivne ja vaikeluline. Siin on uduloori mähkumist ja kummituslikku aja parameetrite hülgamist. Kogumike mõte on juhatada kuulajad artistide manu, ja siinsel 12-loolisel kogumikul on küll ja küll, mille järele pärida. Artistidest on sellel suurepärasel kogumikul esindatud Amby Downs, Lortica, Tzekin, Aqrn, Brad Harkan, Wytchings, Fia Fiell, Happy Axe, Alexis Weaver, Eira, Invisible Prism ning A Country Practice.

Comment: this miscellany comes to us thanks to Brazilian imprint The Blog That Celebrates Itself. The compilation consists of 14 pieces by Mexican combos based on braveheart rocking sounds of post-punk and coldwave heritage which in turn are supported by some transgressive progressions through ambient, motorik and darkened electronic music. There are up such artists as Tajak, Pure Morning, Los Kowalski, Has a Shadow, Zeit!, The Blue Dress, Car Crash Sisters, El Shirota, Le 1991, Somewhere, Knives, Sunset Images, OCEΔNSS, and Telephone Exchange (their track Machine Learning can be considered the highpoint due to lengthy hypnotic krautrock-ish jamming). In a word, highly enjoyable gathering of ensembles and tracks.

Comment: in fact, indie compilations may be boring and dull but it cannot be assumed about French imprint Beko DSL and especially about this 18-notch outing. There are up such artists as Tan Dollar, Ender Belongs To Me, Ela Orleans, Colours, Black Vatican, William Cody Watson, Happy New Year, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jani/Jussi, Collatone, Krusht, To The Happy New, The KVB, Michael Parallax. There is represented a smorgasbord of sounds and styles and an immense amount of crossovers between them. At times more straightforward and noisy, at times more languid and dreamy. At times more electronically employed, sometimes more guitars brought to the focus, at times more vowel effects brought forth thereby echoing back to the golden days of a new wave of the New Weird movement in the 00s. Yet there are up a couple of brilliants over there – Happy New Year's hypnagogic cover of Iggy Pop's The Endless Sea, and Ela Orleans 's Beat Goes On (live at Budokan) which strives to be successfully gravity-free. In a word, get immersed in an idea of indie music of how it would have perpetuated in the beginning of the 10s.

Musically it is a wide scope of electronic explorations, from modern classical and experimental electronica/glitch mixed sounds and angular ambient developments to bubbly electro pop, uncanny post-disco frequencies and even sultry bhangra vibes. In a word, this whole is a lovely accumulation of different styles and artsy intentions.

Comment: this batch of 7 compositions is a part of the discography of an imprint called Smoke with purpose to advertise Japanese music. What else we know about Japanese music but Japanese noise, space/psychedelic rock combos and Shibuya-kei, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Pizzicato 5? Indeed, the Japanese music scene is highly eclectic and synthetic and the intention to provide a review about it seems to be tautological a priori. Yet in reality there are up tracks by such artists as Gamacid707, Yossshy, Dan Kubo, Taura Yorihisa, Daisuke Kawashima, EZCO, Seaketa. In reality, in a sense, any sort of music review is not very informative and a bit at odds with the nature of a musical composition. In other words, chords cannot be fully covered by the words. Words create their own microsystem. Descriptively, there are up disparate sonic experiments, from airy vowel and picturesque ambient touches to artsy noise/glitch drenched electro developments and catchy Italo disco and Hi-NRG synth-pop/post-disco vibes to littered concrete music mixed appearances. As I have already hinted at my comment does not matter, the compilation does.

Comment: these 60 minutes are something special from the past when indie music was tightly mingled with electronic music. Aerotone was a German imprint which had complemented the tradition being launched by such imprints as Monika Enterprise, Morr Music, and City Slang. There are up 14 songs by such artists as The Royal Horse Gala, 7oi, Leader, Mint, Gras, Renniac, Turnus, Cignol, Cloinc, Blisaed, Muhr, Planet Boelex, Ecoplan, and Aligning Minds. In a word, back then in 2006 such sort of music was a borderline indie example but today it is not anymore. Such sort of music can be considered a mainstream indie case. However, old cases like this one are more pleasant for me than new ones because most new ones could be evaluated in the future while having a decent time span behind. One should get a chance to separate out between a hype and a lasting virtue. By the recent miscellany it can be admitted this borderline case is truly transgressive (it is the tautological assumption, though!) by providing many intriguing yet full-fledged dodges within the whole. All in all, admit a solid present for this special day.

Comment: this is the second compendium of classic Canadian songs (two other ones would be added) covered by contemporary Canadian artists within the series of music compilations where contemporary Canadian artists are asked to cover their favourite Canadian song before the year of 2006, the year Quick Before It Melts as a platform and music marketing blog was launched. The scope of indie music is wide over there because there are up 21 compositions in total. Indeed, the concept seems to be intriguing. There are up gentle sugary ballads and cheerful pop rock incantations and indie folk numbers to enchanting shoegaze-y incantations to transcend an original ditty onto a disparate territory and elegant fuzz pop/rock driven and feedback intoxicated punk rock freakouts to overtly poppy electronic interpretations. There are up such artists as Hollowphonic, The Holy Gasp, VIRE, Evening Hymns, KASHKA, No Museums, Camp David, Matt LeGroulx, Whale Eye, TV Sets, Crossley Hunter, Valery Gore, Alex Bent+The Emptiness, Venus Sans Fur, Las Venus Skyway, Nick Faye & The Deputies, Blackpaw Society, Stonetrotter, WHOOP-Szo, Jonathan Pearce, and Champion Lover. Of course, given that a cover song could be evaluated one should know about the original song either. To evaluate for is the cover version just a faint take-off or could the artist add some new and singular influxes to the mix. However, the whole impression is above the average for sure. Very pro. Listen to the rest (three) miscellanies additionally.

Comment: this bunch of 15 tracks is dedicated to a Brisbane, Australian indie juggernauts The Go-Betweens, a conditional Australian counterpart to The Smiths which probably foretold such groups as Belle and Sebastian, The Concretes. From artsy, keyboards-driven progressions and chamber pop alike expressions to jangly guitar pop to serene indie pop to powerful reverberations by obsessively exploring noise and shoegaze numbers. There are represented such artists as Sinking, Corrections, Leisure Walks, Undone, Waving Blue, Poëtka, Vida Eterna, Soft Layers, Teething Veils, The Vividels, All Sparks Burn Out, Echodrone, Electric LO FI Seresta, Flowers Must Die, and Mevius. This great tribute is issued by The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records. And the compilation is dedicated to Grant McLennan (1958-2006), a founder member of the combo.

Comment: this bunch of 22 tracks provides a good overview about the intention and music of such a cutting-edge imprint as cassette-only Bob Chaos (based on Muncie, Indiana, USA) due to a music label from the Netherlands, WM Recordings. Actually it was released in 2004, at the time home recording activities and the New Weird movement started appear in a dizzy way. Actually by such artists as Latent Chaos, Modern Exteriors, The Suadetones, Atomic Butterfly, MCRB, Disposable Air Sickness Band, Sonic Clams, Band-O-Fun, and Soul Celtics the listener can find out many those characteristics which started appear two decades later. Knee-deep psychedelia, at times being deliberately buffoonish and provoking by subverting the so-called established pop narratives. For instance, there is up a slippery version of Goldfinger by The Suadestones, there is also a song being obviously aroused by the Broadway aesthetics as a main sign of Western Capitalism and decadence. At times there are up themes being obsessive in their absurdity and madness being imbued with faint odours coming from the glistening aesthetic of Joe Meek, kitchen sink, space age music, radiophonic art, exploitation genres, and free jazz. I have always adored such sort of bands who dared to provide absurdity as a refreshing colour to the embodiment of music. And the most important thing is that we all are the apes in spite of bearing clothes and by using smart talk. By the way, our closer relatives used to do it as well. In a word, it is fun to partake in that decorous, spiky madness. Would you cut off your dick for art?

Grotesque, Musicos Del Metro, Kellies, Dadalú, Caballo Loco, Collectivo No, Ø+yn, Pibes De Merlo, Los Pastores De Gelatina, Radio Chilena, and Oso* Y Los Mongos Freneticos are the names represented on this compilation of a fairly broad extent. Thanks to an imprint, Los Emes Del Oso to whom some glimpses from Chile, and Argentina are represented over there. Lots of improvised and immediate sounds (as if straightly from the street and a carnival) make me feel alright, although the processed sounds presented over there are also fine and freely floating – from Os Mutantes-stylized avant/prog mixed Tropicàlia pop (indeed, music does not recognize the geographical borders) and old school radio chirping to murky drone and darkwave flickers to deranged psychedelic addressing and spacey theremin/analogue synth-based developments and warped ethnic/world music extravaganzas. Undoubtedly you can find out much different attitude and parochial approach (in a good sense, of course) you are not allowed to discover in Europe, and the USA. Top notch which makes me psyched out.

I guess most of these names may be unknown to you, however, being an ardent follower of the imprints then you should have made acquaintance with the artists. Let`s have some thread about the compilation which will be clocked in at a 54 minute (indeed, it is an accepted longitude for a compilation). Undoubtedly it is a variegated issue with flourishing accents and exuberant shades. At times it is rhythmically obsessive just consisting of different rhythmic combinations to following one another or establishing new mutations within the rhythmic matrix. Some tracks are broadened with progressions toward atmospheric spheres and extracting an enchanting quintessence from synthesiser. All in all, I could not mention any weak track within the whole so I have to admit it to be a classy, mandatory compilation. Get it, support it.

V.A Christmas (2009)

  • Indietronica
  • Art pop
  • Electronic pop
  • Conceptual
  • Improvised music
  • IDM
  • Folktronica
  • Drone pop
  • Organcore

Comment: today is the 29th of April, and it is a date quite far away from the Christmas but I have to admit it is one of the best Xmas compilations I have ever heard. It does not include traditional Christmas songs but new ones. Most of the songs used to chime and soar based on sublime electronic progressions and delicate chord changes, mutant frequencies and crispy beats. Additionally one can find out more technical and maybe less emotion arousing tracks either, for instance, two gentle improvised tracks by Makunouchi Bento. I guess it could be exciting, and at times ennobling and relaxing by listening to the whole while sitting with your family around the table. The compilation is a part of the discography of Petite & Jolie by including 13 tracks in total. There are up such artists as Makunouchi Bento, Julian Winter, Relative_q, QuasiMojo, Pam, Kaneel, Valzi and Blot, Windy Hill Mill, and The_Zwicker_Tone.

Comment: this set of 26 tracks clocking in at a 90 minute is a great miscellany to reflect upon the quality of the region's music. The tremendous part consists of bands coming from Russia but some groups come from Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic and from some other countries. Secondly, the guitar music does not mean only some sort of strings but also the drums and different sort of keyboards most of them legendary Soviet synths like Polivoks. On the other side, the main accent is on guitars like Tonika, Musima, Jolana which were derivatives of the US-based crafty hardware. There are up enough tracks which do have more similarities with synth-pop and electro pop than die-hard classic rock. However, through the tremendous part of Russian bands there are also represented tracks reflecting upon the so-called Vyssotski's songwriting. And there is also up post-punk in the style of a rough, even experimental Kino. Xmas has already passed by there is a hint at it either. Let's listen to it. The favourite track of mine? I may be Photon's Discobolus, an astounding mix of cellophane tinged jangle pop and moderate dance vibes. It may be Superstruny's Cziestnaja Igra, an alternative rock example gravitating frantically toward psychedelic idols. The solid miscellany is compiled by the Polish Bonimedia led by Emil Bonifaczuk.

VA – The Moon (2017)

  • Shoegaze
  • Ethereal wave
  • Dream pop
  • Alternative pop/rock
  • Indie pop/rock
  • Post-punk

Comment: I have always thought that a serious compilation should start with the teaser to give it a dynamic boost. Indeed, here it is Eternal Something's September chiming like Cocteaus on synths. As a record label entitles itself The Blog That Celebrates Itself you can be sure it comes out mainly with shoegaze inspired tracks full of purple tinged dreams, hazy beauty, colourful fantasies and psychedelic fringes. But not only this – you can hear also proto-shoegaze sounds the likes of harking back to Cocteau Twins, and Durutti Column. Indeed, all the modern ways bring back to the post-punk sound. By the way, there is represented one track coming very directly from the goth/post-punk breed and there are up a few exceptions additionally. One of those is a favourite of mine the track called Ethereal Love by Dead Serpent at utmost dreams. I would call it infinite darkgaze/ethereal wave. Additionally to the aforementioned artists there are represented such artists as Tropique Noir, Hazed, Bugjar, Pure Confusion, Street Bird, The Wagner Logic, Ikiryo, Strange Things, The Last Passenger, Elegant Dead Star, and European Ghost.
